Lakewood Results

We had a great first tournament at Lakewood this past weekend and many of the students did quite well. The results have been posted to the Student Access page so please check that for commentary regarding your participation at the tournament. Everyone should be proud for participating and even those who didn’t take away awards should be excited to have their first tournament under their belt. Remember, even losing a round or two should be a learning experience and we can only aim higher for our next round of competition.

Changes in the Tournament Handbook

Some important changes have been instituted for this upcoming season and I advise all students to review them.  They include such changes as –

  • Drop Fees – The Drop Fee for CHSAA tournaments is equal to the Registration Fee.
  • Debate Evidence Rules – We have adopted the NFL Debate Evidence Rules for use in CX Debate, LD Debate, and PF Debate.
  • Debate Time Limits – We have aligned the time limits for CX Debate, LD Debate, and PF Debate with the NFL Guidelines. Time limit changes include: CX – 5 minute rebuttals; LD – 4 minute preparation time.
  • Online Interp Sources – We have adopted the NFL rules regarding online interpretation sources, on a one-year trial basis.
  • New this year is the CHSAA Speech Judge Certification Test.  This online test is free of charge and is located on the CHSAA website.  This test must be successfully completed by critics who would like to judge at the State Speech Festival, the State Regional Qualifying Tournaments, and the State Tournament.  All judges MUST work a minimum of one regular season tournament and successfully complete the test to judge.
  • Ballot changes – ballots for all interp and debate events were updated to reflect rules changes.

2012 Debate Season

Hello everyone.  This post regards the upcoming speech and debate season at Pomona HS.  The tentative signup/kickoff party is scheduled for Friday, September 7th.  As you may or may not know, according to speechmeets.com, the first novice debate meet will be on October 6, 2012 at Lakewood High School.  This will give us roughly a month to get the novices polished into shape and allow the returning competitors to fine tune their skills and help welcome the newer members of the team.

I encourage you to get the word out regarding the upcoming season so that we can enroll as many competitors as possible.  If all goes as planned the debate program will also allow students to work as an independent study to accrue credits towards graduation.

Please use the contact page listed above, or email me directly at this address.  Thanks for visiting and good luck to everyone this season!
